There may be several reasons for sensitivity in teeth. Caries, receding gums, and wear on the enamel due to teeth clenching can be counted among the main causes. If the sensitivity is caused by caries, filling treatment is required. Sensitivity due to gum recession can also be resolved in the long term by using desensitizing toothpastes, or in the shorter term with medications administered in the clinic. If caries has started on the root surfaces that emerged after gum recession, fillings must be made again. To prevent sensitivity due to teeth clenching, it may be necessary to make aligners that prevent teeth from wearing and are used at night. These plaques are made individually by your dentist after taking measurements.
Abscess is a swelling that can occur in various parts of the body. They are swellings filled with pus and inflamed fluid. Generally, the cause is bacterial infections. The result of this infection is the swelling that occurs when both dead bacterial cells and tissue cells accumulate in the relevant area after the struggle in that area, as the body’s defense mechanism comes into play. It can sometimes be treated with antibiotics and sometimes with surgical intervention. Abscesses damage the surrounding tissue and cause destruction there. Tooth abscesses also damage the jaw bone in the area where they are located, causing it to melt. They are painful, can cause fever, and can spread to other areas through blood and lymph, sometimes causing serious dangers (such as sepsis). The treatment method for dental abscesses is to treat or extract the causative tooth, if there is one, and to drain the abscess as soon as possible. While these can be done with antibiotics when necessary, there are also abscesses that can be eliminated without using antibiotics. We call these chronic abscesses. For this reason, popular judgments such as ‘abscessed teeth cannot be extracted without using antibiotics’ are not valid for chronic abscesses.
The main material of the implant is titanium. Different surface materials can be used to ensure adhesion to bone. There is no known case of allergy to titanium reported in the literature. What people say is that the implant caused an allergy, it did not work, the body threw it away, are actually the results that occur either due to infection or due to the implant not adhering well to the bone. Very rarely, after the implant is made, we encounter patients who come to us saying that this implant makes me uncomfortable, it causes allergies, it makes me nauseous, it makes me dizzy, but the examinations show that there is no problem with the implants of such patients, and the main source of the problem is determined to be psychological.
Root canal treatments are not necessarily treatments that we can say will be successful. There is no guarantee of any treatment in medicine, but root canal treatments have their own difficulties. Reasons such as the bacteria causing the infection, the shape and narrowness of the root canals, and the number of them can make root canal treatment difficult and lead to failure. Apart from this, even during a successful root canal treatment, patients may feel pain in the intermediate stages. The reason for this may sometimes be incorrect practices, abscessed or necrosed teeth with a high number of bacteria, and sometimes the patient’s immune system. After all, recovery from a disease varies from person to person. This is also the case with root canal treatments. Some patients may respond quickly and positively, while others may respond negatively and slowly. Pain experienced in the intermediate stages can be reduced with the intervention of the physician and different applications. Additionally, anti-inflammatory painkillers used in these sessions are also beneficial.
After tooth extraction, it is appropriate to wait around 2 months for bone to re-form in the extracted area. If there is no infection in the area after tooth extraction and there is enough bone for the implant to attach, it is also possible to place an implant immediately after extraction. However, in these cases, it may be necessary to use adjuncts such as additional bone grafts (bone powder). This may increase the cost.
If the extracted tooth is due to gingivitis or is an abscessed tooth, you must wait at least 3 weeks to place an implant there.
Amalgam actually means alloy. Amalgam fillings used in dentistry contain metals such as silver, copper, tin and mercury. Mercury is in the heavy metal group and its accumulation in the body is harmful. We also get mercury from various foods (mussels, seafood, fish). It is said that if these types of heavy metals accumulate above a certain level in the body, they can cause many negative effects, especially neurological diseases. Amalgam fillings release mercury vapor when they are made, causing some mercury to settle in the body. Likewise, when these fillings are removed, they release mercury vapor, and some mercury may settle in the body this way. However, this rate is still not considered life-threatening. The number of fillings performed, the number of times they were performed, and the person’s genetic predispositions guide us in this regard.
Amalgam fillings are not prohibited by health organizations around the world. In some countries, it is not recommended for pregnant women. There is no ban on this issue in our country. Despite these possible damages, it provides an antibacterial effect due to the silver it contains and causes less caries than modern fillings. However, the use of these fillers is decreasing day by day.
